Have you ever wished that someone would stand by you no matter what the circumstance?
When a man and woman get married, they often share wedding vows that may say something similar to, “For better and for worse, for richer and for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish until we are separated by death.” These simple words express the promise to stand by one another. These are words of commitment and faithfulness.
When you promise to stand by someone, you are committing yourself to them.
God Promises to Stand By You
In Acts 27, we read that in the midst of a turbulent storm at sea, while the ship was being tossed violently by the waves, God was still standing by Paul. Verses 23-24 state, “For there stood by me this night an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I serve, saying, ‘Do not be afraid, Paul.’”
God was aware of Paul’s circumstances and He sent an angel to remind Paul that He was standing by him during the storm. What a beautiful example of God’s commitment to us during the violent storms of life.
This should not come as a surprise, but should instead be a reminder to us of the everlasting faithfulness of our Savior.
In Joshua 1:5, God states, “I will not leave you nor forsake you.” This is why the psalmist declares in Psalm 89:1, “I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever; with my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.”
God Promises to Never Abandon You
Our God is truly faithful. In fact, He is the very definition of faithfulness. People may come and go in our lives, but God never leaves us. He is always standing by us in the good times and bad.
Perhaps like Paul, you are going through one of life’s vicious storms right now. You may feel alone and abandoned. Though you may feel that way, nothing could be further from the truth.
God promises repeatedly in His Word that in those moments, He is by our side, ready to comfort us. Psalm 18:2 proclaims, “The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
The enemy wants us to believe that God has turned His back on us, but God wants us to know that He is standing by us, no matter what. As Hebrews 10:23 states, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.”
Do you want someone to stand by you no matter what the circumstance? You already have Him. His name is Jesus Christ.
