One Christmas Present that Will Last Forever

I love the Christmas season and one of my favorite reasons is giving gifts to my loved ones. Of course, when I was a kid it was receiving gifts that my siblings and I were more interested in!

The Little Airplane that Couldn't

I remember one Christmas, my brother, Eddie, asked for a remote control airplane. Well, he got one, except it was only remote control in the air. To get it off the ground we had to launch it with a giant rubber band which was connected on one end to the airplane and on the other end to a stake in the ground.

It took us hours to assemble the plane and then finally the big moment arrived!

We launched the plane successfully into the sky, then my dad turned to Eddie and handed him the remote control. I’ll never forget it. Eddie took the remote, made a sudden jerking move with the control stick, and the plane instantly nosedived straight to the ground where it was obliterated in hundreds of pieces!

Hours of assembly and preparation ended in a few short seconds of flight time and a devastating explosion. To this day, I think that was the most short-lived Christmas present I have ever witnessed.

The gifts this world has to offer just aren’t what they’re cracked up to be.

The Only Gift that Lasts

On the other hand, Jesus Christ is our ultimate Christmas present.

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given.
— Isaiah 9:6

Did you catch that? Unto us a Son is given.

Jesus was given to us by the Father as a gift. Unlike the gifts of this world, Jesus will never change, break, or get lost, and no one can ever take Him away from us (or us from Him).

Some gifts, like my brother’s airplane, last only a few seconds, but Jesus Christ is quite literally the gift that keeps on giving, for all eternity.

So next time we sit down with our families to exchange gifts—whether it’s for Christmas, a birthday, or whatever the occasion may be—please be reminded of the most precious and beautiful present of all, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. May He be the only treasure that our hearts truly desire and seek.

Thousands of years ago, wise men sought Him. Today, may wise men (and women) seek Him still. Merry Christmas!
